Focal Persons of 24 Educational Institutions Trained to Lead the “Hum Hain Pakistan” SDG Youth Campaign
A day-long Training and Orientation of Focal Persons of the Hum Hain Pakistan SDG Youth Campaign was held today at the Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Services (PIPS), Islamabad, bringing together focal persons nominated by 24 educational institutions of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
The training was organised by the International Governance and Sustainability Institute (IG-SI) as implementing partner, under the lead of the National Parliamentary Task Force on SDGs.
Addressing the inaugural session, Ms. Shaista Pervaiz, Convenor of the Parliamentary Task Force on SDGs, said that with nearly two-thirds of Pakistan’s population under the age of thirty, our youth are not a constituency to be addressed at the end of the policy process — they are the country’s single greatest asset in achieving the Goals. She described focal persons as the link between Parliament and the country’s young population.
Dr. Sultan Azam Temuri, Founding Director & CEO of IG-SI, gave an overview of the campaign. He recalled that Pakistan was among the first countries to formally adopt the 2030 Agenda through a unanimous National Assembly resolution in February 2016, yet today ranks around 131 out of 169 on the SDG Index — the lowest in South Asia, with only four years remaining. “Hum Hain Pakistan is the platform that mobilises young people in their own classrooms and their own communities,” he said, adding that a young population that is educated, skilled and active is Pakistan’s greatest strength, while one that is idle and ignored becomes its greatest challenge.
